About PlaceGenerator
A free utility for discovering real geography and inventing fictional place names — built for worldbuilders, educators, and curious minds.
What is PlaceGenerator?
PlaceGenerator is a collection of tools that help you pick real countries, states, and cities with useful facts — or invent fictional place names shaped by genre, era, mood, and cultural style. Every generated result comes with context: real-mode entries include population, capitals, and geographic details; created names explain why each result works for the settings you chose.
Why we built it
Worldbuilding tools often lean too far into fantasy or too dry into data. We wanted something that sits at the intersection — practical enough for classroom use, creative enough for fiction and games. Whether you're naming towns on a map, running a capital-quiz warm-up, or generating batch data for a prototype, PlaceGenerator is meant to be fast, free, and genuinely useful.
How it works
Real-place data is compiled from public datasets including ISO country codes, REST Countries, and national statistics offices. Fictional names are generated using procedural rules tuned by cultural style, genre, and mood — no AI training on user input, ever. You can copy results, download them as CSV or JSON, and use them anywhere.
